Apostle Peter: True Strength of Character out of Human Weakness
Rev. Mark Kosko
I. Of humble beginnings
A son of a fisherman but willing to drop his nets and follow Jesus
Not highly educated or gifted but simply willing to obey
Enthusiastic for Jesus yet still fell short
II. As part of Jesus’ inner circle you see his boldness AND human failing
He saw Jesus walk on water (Matt 14)
He witnessed the transfiguration (Matt 17)
He corrected God (Acts 10)
In the final hours he declared his fierce allegiance to Jesus (Matt 26 and John 13)
III. Because of (not despite) failure and brokenness Peter’s true character in Christ
emerges
Jesus not only forgave but restored Peter
God’s unconditional love and mercy is almost too unbearable to take
Peter spent the rest of his remaining days boldly proclaiming Christ
IV. Reflection
Experiencing true intimacy with the Lord may require one to be confronted by his or her own failings and brokenness even as Christians. But are we willing to be that vulnerable and wounded to cry out to God in order for the true character God intends in each of us to emerge.
