Elijah: Man’s Obedience and God’s Faithfulness
(1 Kings 17-19)
Rev. Neil Kim
I. Getting a calling (17:1)
God is looking for people to stand in the gap and declare that our Jehovah God is the true living God.
God didn’t send an army to confront Ahab and Jezebel. He chose an individual, Elijah.
II. Personal Training (17:2-6)
God wanted to work on Elijah’s inner life to prepare him for the mission at hand.
God wanted to train Elijah to the level of trust where he would trust God for daily needs.
III. Field Trainings (17:8-24)
God often uses the most humbling tasks to prepare us for his greater purpose. (v. 9)
The situation may get worse instead of getting better. (vv. 10-12)
Elijah’s faithful obedience lead to miracles and influenced a widow to obey and experience God’s miracles.
IV. Real Battles (Ch. 18)
Finally, after three long years, God speaks to Elijah, “Go and present yourself to Ahab.”
Elijah was well prepared for the battle. There is no hesitation, doubts and fear. We see confident and unwavering servant of God.
V. Spiritual Downtime (Ch. 19)
After a great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah fell into severe discouragement.
God gently restores Elijah rather than rebuking him of his let down.
God always deals with us with kindness and gentleness. His desire is to restore gently so that we can refocus on Him again.
VI. Application
After a great victory on Mount Carmel, Elijah fell into severe discouragement. How did God restore him?
Despite the miracles God performed through him, Elijah was only human, like us. Do you believe God can do the same thing with your life?
Do you feel you are all alone sometimes? How do you handle yourself in that situation?
