Job: Persecution to Repentance
Rev. Eugene Cha
I. Who is Job? (1:1-4)
Job is a wealthy man that lived long ago
Job in Hebrew means “one persecuted”
Job in Arabic means “to repent”
II. Job’s response to the first test (1:20-22)
Everything we have comes from God
God gives AND takes away
Example of Jonah
III. Job’s response to the second test (2:9-10)
We accept the good from God but don’t want the bad
God doesn’t owe us anything
We must submit to all the arrangements of God without a murmur
IV. Job’s response to his friends (23:11-12)
Sometimes the bad things that happen in life isn’t because of our sin
Example of Jesus healing the man born blind
This isn’t a free pass to sin all we want
V. Job’s response to God (42:1-6)
Through persecution we experience humility
Compared to a pure and holy God, we are sinful
The proper response when we see God is one of repentance
VI. Application
How do we feel about suffering? Are we like Job?
Do we only desire the good things that God gives? Or can we embrace the bad?
Are we full of self-righteousness or humble before God?
