Make Good on your Faith in the Lord
(Jonah 2:1-10)
Rev. Mark Kosko
I. A Place for Deep Thought
God had Jonah’s Attention in the Fish’s Belly (v. 1)
Was Jonah truly sorry or just stuck?
He Praised God nonetheless
II. Consequences for Disobedience
Hurled into the deep (v. 3)
Banished from God’s sight (v. 4)
But in the moment of crisis Jonah thought of God and prayed! (v. 7)
III. Jonah was Rescued Despite Bringing about his Crisis
God hears prayers (v. 10)
Give up Idols and Sacrifice with Thanksgiving (vv. 8-9)
Make Good on your Word (v. 9)
IV. Reflection on the Passage:
Jonah was rescued by God from extreme crisis brought about by his own disobedience to God. At least this crisis of death by drowning in a violent storm never became a crisis of Faith for Jonah. He never once doubted God’s existence nor did he doubt God’s complete and utter power and authority over us. Has your Faith in God ever been challenged by extreme crisis?
