Genesis 28-35
II. Jacob’s Scheme vs God’s Plan
1. First Encounter – Dream @ Bethel (28:10-22)
2. Jacob faces Laban his biggest rival (29-30)
3. God calls Jacob out of Laban’s place (31:3,13)
4. Second Encounter - Wrestles with God at Bethel (32:22-30)
III. God’s Plan Prevails
1. God brings Jacob back to Bethel (35:1)
2. Repentance (35:2)
3. Jacob fulfills his vow (35:3)
4. Broken yet Blessed (32:25)
5. New Identity (32:27-28)
IV. Lessons
1. Jacob used deception and bargain to gain “blessing” but God’s true
“blessing” came through submission and encounter with God.
2. God disciplines Jacob through another deceiver like Laban to
humble him to let Jacob recognize his downfall.
3. What Jacob wanted, he got but it cost him his family. There are
consequences to our choices that we make if we go against God’s
will. Jacob’s compromise to settle in Schechem (instead of Bethel)
brought on a serious trouble on his family
4. Jacob was Broken, yet Blessed
