Hannah: A Powerful Driving Force Behind Samuel
Rev. Sara Pyon
(1 Samuel 1 & 2)
I. Hannah was ‘handicapped’ and heartbroken (1:1-8)
God had closed her womb (1:5)
God opened her womb after her heart was open to God (1:11)
II. Hannah prayed (1:9, 12-13, 15-16; 2:1)
In bad times and good times: before, during, and after Samuel’s birth
Fervently, persistently, and faithfully
Resulted in perfect alignment with God’s will for her life (James 4:3)
III. Hannah instilled a sense of God-ordained destiny in her son Samuel
She honored her vow to God (1:22)
She prepared Samuel early on (1:20-28)
She remained a great spiritual influence on Samuel (2:18, 22-26)
She was the best mom: She didn’t raise Samuel herself.
IV. Hannah understood and accepted it’s not about her (2:1-11)
V. Reflection questions
Is there something you’ve been desperately asking God for but are not being granted to you? Why do you think that is?
If God has given you children, physical and/or spiritual, how is your parenting style or priorities different from Hannah’s?
What do you sense God is trying to give birth to in and through your life? Have you totally surrendered your life to God’s sovereignty?
