Covetousness—the Deadly Sin No One Talks About
(Joshua 7 & 8)

 I. Be careful not let your guard down after experiencing success
Achan sinned and made the entire community liable to destruction(6:17-19; 7:1, 21-26)
The Israelites were over-confident and did not rely on the Lord (7:2-5)
The devil never takes a break (1 Peter 5:8)

 

II. Guard against the deadly sin of covetousness (7:21)
It’s the Tenth Commandment
It’s ‘the mother of sin’, a root of all kinds of evil
It’s a form of idolatry (Col. 3:5; Luke 10:27)
It robs you of God’s best – God’s perfect timing and provision (8:1-2)

 III. How to reject the life of covetousness
Acknowledge, repent, and remain watchful
Seek first the Kingdom of God (Matt. 6:33;  Col.3:1-3)
In how you pray(Matt. 6:9-13)
Through your generosity  (Luke 12:33-34)

 IV. Reflection
Do you think Christians really believe that they can get away with sin and not suffer painful consequences?  If not, why do we continue to sin?
Share what ‘devoted things’ of God you may be in danger of having stolen from God.  How would you remedy the situation?
