(21) A Hard Teaching to Accept (Without God)
(John 6:60-71)
Rev. Mark Kosko
Background Verses: John 6:53-59
“ …unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you.” (v. 53)
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life...” (v. 54)
I. A New Teaching that Transcends this Life
Eating the flesh and drinking the blood of a carpenter’s son is definitely offensive! (v. 61)
In time, all will understand this teaching as coming from Christ Messiah. (v. 62)
Key Verse: Partaking in the body and blood of Christ is spiritually life giving. (v. 63)
II. Not All Believed
Many believed in the signs and wonders but could no longer follow this man from Nazareth. (vv. 64-66)
Those who stilled remained believed in Christ because God enabled them to. (vv. 65, 67-69)
The Twelve still believed even without full knowledge of the full Gospel message of Christ’s death and resurrection. (vv.70-71)
III. John the Fourth Gospel Writer
Radical Church? How about 1st Century Radical Gospel? The Synoptics vs. John
John was not really about the Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth- No lineage, no baby in the manger, no calling of the Twelve, Jesus fed the multitude, body and blood but only feet washing at the Last Supper
What is John’s main thrust of his writings? The Way back to our spiritual relationship with God through Jesus Christ
This Gospel focuses on the Spiritual Realm of Christ the Messiah John 1:1-2, 14- “The Word became flesh …”
Manna from Heaven was for the body, but Christ’s body gives true Eternal Life
