 “Faith and Works: Inseparable Elements”
(James 2:14-25)
Dr. W. Jamie Kim

 I. Inseparable Elements in Salvation
James insists that a living faith will authenticate itself in the production of works. There is no antagonism between faith and works. They are not totally distinct concepts, but rather two inseparable elements in salvation.

II. Works: Essential Expression of Faith
It is not a contradiction to Paul’s teaching of salvation by faith. “that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law” (Rom. 3:28, cf. Rom. 4:1-12; Gal. 3:6-14) “A strawy epistle without evangelical character” (Martin Luther)
But James asserts that “by works a man is justified” (2:24)

III. Works: Proof of Faith, Not A Path to Salvation
Both James and Paul view good works as the proof of faith, not the path to salvation.
It is not a basis of our salvation but evidence (demonstration) of our salvation.

IV. Character of a Living Faith
It is not in indifferent (vv. 15-16)
It is not independent (v. 17)
It is not invisible (v. 18)
It comes from the heart (v. 19)
It is useful (vv. 20-26)

 V. Application
In your own words explain the relationship between faith and works.
James said, “Faith without deeds is useless!” How can we understand this so that we can apply it in our daily lives?
James gives a very specific example of this in two places, one in vv. 14-18 and one in vv. 19-26. Do you think you have clear evidence of your salvation when you apply these two principles?
