Internship Program Guide
Details of Prison Fellowship's 2004 Summer Internship Program in the National Capital area and numerous field offices
Prison Fellowship (www.pfm.org) offers exciting and stimulating summer internships at our National Office in Reston, Virginia (located 20 miles outside of Washington, DC) and numerous field offices. This program provides students with an opportunity to apply academic learning in a professional working environment. The internship program (www.pfm.org/internships) is designed to meet the academic requirements placed upon the student, while providing the flexibility to meet the student's personal interests and career aspirations. Fields of study may include: public policy, criminal justice, political science, marketing, liberal arts, and information technology, etc.  Placements are available in a wide variety of areas including:
•        public relations
•        training and education
•        information technology
•        marketing
•        research
•        hospitality
Interns also participate in a seminar sponsored by The Wilberforce Forum (www.wilberforce.org), the research and worldview arm of Prison Fellowship.
About Prison Fellowship
Prison Fellowship is a Christian ministry headquartered in Reston, Virginia, a suburb of the Nation's Capital. Founded by Chuck Colson in 1976 to assist the Christian Church in their ministry to prisoner, ex-prisoners and their families, we focus on three things:
•        Fellowshipping with Jesus, including personal discipleship, equipping churches and volunteers for service, Breakpoint radio ministry and Christian publications and worldview issues
•        Visiting Prisoners, including training volunteers for prison ministry, publications for prisoners and a prisoner pen pal program.
•        Welcoming Children, including Angel Tree Christmas, Camping and Mentoring Programs all designed for prisoners' children.
Our National Office provides creative services, financial, IT and administrative support for over 30 field offices throughout the United States. Together with our field staff, churches and volunteers, we serve in many capacities to make our vision a reality. Prison Fellowship's President is former Virginia Attorney General, Mark Earley, who regularly meets with the interns and staff for fellowship and instruction.
Benefits of the Program
Working for Prison Fellowship can be a rewarding and maturing experience as students gain a Christian perspective on important issues of our time. Academically there are many benefits. These include the opportunity to:

Placement of Interns
Prospective interns are interviewed over the telephone and selection is made based on the student best prepared and suitable for the position. Once selected, we work with students on their schools' requirements that must be fulfilled, along with a discussion of their own goals for their summer experience. Prior to starting, students will have the opportunity to interact with their supervisor to establish the parameters of position. Students will receive and review a position description which outlines:
•        The projected responsibilities to be completed by the intern.
•        The duration of the internship.
•        The hours to be worked during the internship.
•        The educational requirements associated with the position.
•        The amount of compensation, based on $5.15 per hour.
Supervision and Evaluations
Our goals include planning work activities that focus on projects related to the interests of the student. Their summer experience is viewed as an extension of the student's academic program. As such their supervisor will focus on opportunities that integrate the student's academic experience in the workplace. Supervisors meet regularly with the students to provide direction and feedback. In addition, we complete any formal evaluations required by the school. Upon completion of the internship, the supervisor evaluates the student and students also complete an evaluation of their supervisor and internship experience. Students receive a copy of their evaluation, which may be used as a reference for prospective employers.
Lodging
Prison Fellowship is able to provide housing for a limited number of students on a first come, first served basis through our host family program.  Our field opportunities are located near field offices close to various schools.  
Worldview Course
As part of the program, students participate in a course, sponsored by The Wilberforce Forum, based on the writings of Chuck Colson and other world view thinkers.  This class helps teach students how to integrate a biblical worldview into all spheres of their lives—at school, at home, and in their culture.
Activities
Reston interns regularly visit Washington, DC and get together for activities during the week and weekends.  Students also attend staff meetings, ministry gatherings, social activities, and meet with leaders from the various ministry divisions.
Applying for the Program
Applicants for the program should have completed at least one year of college and be enrolled for the fall semester, or have graduated in May. Rising college freshman may be considered based on academic preparation gained through advanced studies. ANGEL TREE PROGRAM ASSISTANT   (32-40 HRS/WK)
Assist the Angel Tree team with our programs to prisoners’ children, including correspondence and program development.  As Angel Tree Camping will be in full swing during the summer months, time will be spent on database management and processing camper registration forms.  Requires PC literacy and strong writtenoral communication skills.  Preferred Major:  Business, Communications, or Public Relations

BREAKPOINT EDITORIAL ASSISTANT: WILBERFORCE FORUM   (40 HRS/WK)
Post documents on Wilberforce Forum websites, assist Web Editor with proofreading and editing documents, research/write for websites, magazines and radio broadcasts.  Requires PC literacy including the Internet and strong research/writing skills.  Editing/proofreading skills and published articles preferred.  Preferred Major:  English, Journalism, or Communications

TRAINING & LEARNING SERVICES DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT   (20-35 HRS/WK)
Assist with the development and writing of education training programs, research and review training topic/content materials, and observe and assist in training program delivery (may involve some travel at PF expense).  Requires PC literacy, strong Internet research skills, the ability to work with limited supervision, and strong written/oral communication skills.  Preferred Major:  Education, Theology, or Ministry

MINISTRY RELATIONS RESEARCH AND WRITING ASSISTANT   (35-40 HRS/WK)
Research existing and potential major donors, research donor profiles, and assist with departmental and foundation writing communications.  Requires PC literacy including Internet skills, strong oral/written communication skills, the ability to multi-task/prioritize, and experience in summarizing and applying research results.  Preferred Major:  Journalism, English, or Business  



DIRECT MARKETING ASSISTANT  (30-40 HRS/WK)
Organize data for marketing/donor behavior research purposes, create Direct Mail Sample books, check and organize invoices, learn creative strategies of Direct Mail Marketing, learn the Direct Mail Marketing production process, and assist with proofreading.  Requires strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task/prioritize, and PC proficiency (MS Word and Excel).    Preferred Major:  Marketing or Business Administration

INSIDE JOURNAL INTERN   (40 HRS/WK)
Assist the staff of Inside Journal, the nation’s largest circulating prison publication.  Assist with writing stories, maintaining databases, researching content, and answering IJ mail.    Requires excellent writing ability, completion of introductory journalism classes, and working knowledge of MS Word and email.  Academic writing experience for college publications and a writing interest in social justice or prison-related issues preferred.  Preferred Major:  Journalism or Communications

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INTERN   (40 HRS/WK)
Install software for IT projects, assist with server maintenance, generate reports, assist with data conversion, and provide training assistance.  Requires general software knowledge, Office 97 experience, familiarity with Windows 2000/XP Pro, and the ability to work well in a team environment.  Preferred Major:  Information Technology/Computer Engineering

RESEARCH ASSISTANT: JUSTICE FELLOWSHIP-  WILBERFORCE FORUM  (20-40 HRS/WK)
Research and write articles on restorative justice practices and programs.  Prepare materials for and participate in meetings about legislative issues on Capitol Hill.  Answers inquires about JF and restorative justice from subscribers and supporters.  Assist with website development and management.  Requires PC literacy including Internet skills, strong writing skills, and familiarity with government.  Preferred Major:  Public Policy, Law, Criminal Justice, or Political Science

ASSISTANT TO PUBLIC POLICY DIRECTOR:  WILBERFORCE FORUM  (40 HRS/WK)
Assist with public policy education including drafting and distributing notices with Members of Congress, assist with writing and grassroots activity to support public policy initiatives, and assist in coordinating logistics concerning involvement of Members of Congress in ministry-wide programs and activities.  Requires PC literacy including the Internet, strong writing skills, experience and/or interest in researching legal and public policy issues, and the ability to be a self-starter.  Preferred Major:  Political Science or Public Policy
