Now
God has impressed on my heart 2 Cor. 6:2 lately and there has been a sense of urgency to know God’s will/plan and ultimately His kingdom to rule in my life. I have been feeling a lot like the people in 2 Thessalonians 3:11, “they are not busy, they are busy bodies.” Running around from one place to the next like Mr. Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, I began to realize that I did not keep the main thing the main thing but I majored in my minors and minored in my majors.
The World Cup in South Africa has been streaming live on the internet and through other media. We can enjoy the excitement of it at the exact same time as people in South Africa. We have to watch it live so, we get up early or earlier than usual to see if our favorite teams can win the tournament. It’s not the same to watch “classic” or pre-recorded games on ESPN especially after we know the result of the game.
It’s funny how we, or should I just say “I,” want to experience everything here and now except for what is most important, the spiritual matters. For some reason, I keep pushing off praying and reading the Word because of my current “pressing need.” Now is not the word I like but I prefer “later” when I have more time concerning spiritual matters.
It’s amazing how I have no problem checking my email and facebook in an obsessive compulsive manner throughout the day but I struggle to pray or read the scripture as often as I am on the internet. GK Chesterton once said in the book, Everlasting Man (Helped CS Lewis to become a Christian), “A dead thing can go with the stream but only a living thing can go against it.” Those who are spiritually dead will live with the culture of this world but those who are spiritually awakened can go against it.
At this very moment of writing this column, I am preparing to leave for Ecuador missions today. By the time you are reading this column, I should be back from Ecuador and about to preach my sermon. It’s like the movie Back to the Future and I don’t even know when to call “now” now. Revelation 21 and 22 reminds us Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega. God lives in eternity and there is no beginning or end. Time is in His hands and he says in 2 Cor. 6:2, “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”
My beloved Timothy students: The summer just started and though it may seem like a long way, it’s going to fly by and the next semester will be about to begin. Enjoy every minute of now and take delight in the little things in life. Google GK Chesterston and learn from him how to delight and see God in the little things and common things of life. Enjoy nature and enjoy people around you including your parents who seem to have their hearts set on ruining your holiday with to do lists. But understand this, simply sleeping, watching TV, spending time online, and playing video game is not the best way to enjoy what God has in store for you. 10 years from now, if you still keep this column, you will see that you would have wasted valuable time or even your life (Read Don’t Waste Your Life by John Piper over the summer). Today, make a plan for your spiritual growth for the summer. Sign up for the summer retreat TODAY if you have not already done so. Don’t wait until you are old like the people sitting on the right side of this room to do something for your spiritual life. Be like the young Daniel and his friends who have RESOLVED to live their lives for God (Daniel 1:8). It’s your freedom to choose but as for me and my house… Remember what Joshua said?
Finally, it’s a busy time for my wife and me. We are expecting a baby girl around October and we will need your prayers. We are also moving to a new apartment and we hope that many of you can visit us. Next week, I will be at Tyler, Texas with our YWAM Phase 1 team. Then as soon as I return, I will be in Africa to attend a conference to aid my parents who are working on medical and IT school building projects. But for NOW, ask the Lord of Salvation to speak to you through His Word for TODAY.
